Jacqueline Williams wins council seat

Upminster has a new councillor after a comprehensive by-election win.

Jacqueline Williams, of Upminster and Cranham Residents Association, secured the seat with 1,642 votes at yesterday’s (August 10) vote.

She will be taking over the mantle from Linda Hawthorn, who died earlier this year after holding the seat for more than 30 years.

Ed Green, who was listed on the ballot paper as the Conservative candidate, placed second with 421 votes.

Mr Green was suspended by the party after concerns were raised over social media posts.

He was followed by John Sullivan of Labour who received 234 votes.

Independent candidate, David Durant, scored 150 votes, while Melanie Collins of the Green Party got 115 votes and Liberal Democrat candidate Thomas Clarke polled 35 votes.
